One of our favorite things to do is visit artisan marketplaces and independent shops and meet local people who are making stuff! “Makers” hearken back to a simpler, more earnest time when people took the time to make something right, with passion and attention to detail and quality. The fact that they are all local folks makes it all the better. We love featuring Colorado companies in our annual gift guide. We hope you’ll honor their hard work and love of the craft by doing your holiday shopping with these local merchants.
Birch Benders Pancake & Waffle Mix – “Just add water.” Were there ever three more beautiful words? We love this Boulder company’s easy mixes that address taste preferences and dietary restrictions too. With all-natural ingredients, they have Paleo, Gluten Free and Protein versions and flavors including Chocolate Chip and, for the holidays, Pumpkin Spice, Gingerbread Spice and our favorite, Sweet Potato. We especially love how they call themselves a “Micro-Pancakery.”
BuxieJo Bags – Voted the 2015 Westword Best Of winner for handmade bags, owner and designer, Kerrin Pogozelski says her bags have a strong Colorado voice. “I really like to let each piece, whether it’s a bag, clutch, cuff or wristlet have a distinct character all its own. I feel working with such a natural material, my job is to highlight features such as brand marks, scars and even a fun cowlick.”
Colorado Joe’s – Whether they are making a wall hanging or corn hole game (or other yard games) for an individual or for a company (you’ve played their games at Coors Field and many other places), each item is handmade and custom-designed. Their work is beautiful and high-quality. We’re particularly loving their take on “Colorful” Colorado! (See above)
Ink Lounge Screenprinting Studio – All about the local themselves, they have workshops that teach people how to be makers themselves. But they also sell some cool products they make like koozies, totes, clothing and these totally awesome calendars. We gotta get one for the IGTD offices!
Minds Eye Journals – We first met Teresa Merriman at the CherryArts Festival at the Stanley Marketplace. Not only was she warm and friendly but she makes beautiful blank books. We have to say, there’s something rather strappy and sexy about them! They are just waiting to be filled with…anything!
Park Hill Country – Give the home brewers in your life their own, customized tap handles (no matter how good or bad the brew is). We love the beer coolers that keep our Colorado craft brews chillin’!
Richardo’s Decaf Coffee Liqueur – Delicious straight up or mixed into a variety of cocktails, we love that you can have a coffee cocktail even into the evening and still have a nice nighty-night. We created our own Richardo’s cocktail and incorporated it into a special winter’s evening.
Robin Chocolates – This award-winning chocolatier makes artisan chocolates that not only taste delicious, but are also visually appealing. Some say they look “too pretty to eat” but that sure isn’t going to stop us! We love flavors such as Lavender, Hazelnut Latte and Port Wine Reduction. Robin Chocolates has gifts in a variety of prices. They also ship nationwide. All products are also available at Robin’s shop in Longmont. We’ve tried many Robin Chocolates (MANY!) and love them all.
Spinster Sisters Co. – Every shower or bath becomes a well-deserved treat with soaps and body products by this Colorado company. They last a long time, smell divine, treat your skin beautifully and make your whole bathroom (and body) smell great. Their products just make us happier. We’re very excited that they have expanded and now have two locations in Denver, in addition to their original location in Golden.
Ba-BUY, now, y’all!
