Latigo Modern Mexican, in the Ballpark District is inspired by authentic, regional recipes with a modern twist. I visited with a group of bloggers from the Denver Bloggers Club, some of whom had dietary restrictions such as being vegetarian or gluten-free. No problem for this lovely restaurant, named after the leather strap on the saddletree of a Western saddle that’s used to lighten and secure the cinch. The staff wasn’t the least bit thrown by accommodating our particular needs.
We were off to a great start with the Ceviche de Camaron ($12), beautifully fresh and just the right firmness of texture. Shrimp, onions, tomatoes, serrano chilies, avocado and tortilla strips made for a colorful Small Plate.
We also enjoyed the Cochinita Pibil ($24), a traditional Yucatan dish – Mexican slow-roasted, marinated pork served on a banana leaf with chile habanero escabeche.
The House Coin Margarita ($8) is one of the best I’ve had with tequila, fresh lime juice, simple syrup and orange liqueur with a salt rim. A yummy dessert drink, the Hot Smoky Horchata has Mezcal, Ruaca, XO Coffee Patron and a topping of whipped cream. The two drinks are a great way to start and end your meal!
I’m glad to see that Latigo serves Huaraches, grilled, thick and long corn tortillas (like their name-sake footware) served with a variety of toppings for $12-$14 and Molcajetes, $24-$26, a Central Mexican dish of stewed tomatoes, garlic, jalapenos and onions, served in a Molcajete mortar and pestle made of volcanic rock. It’s an event just to order and eat one!
Latigo’s atmosphere is warm and curvaceous, as appropriate for a business lunch as it is for a date or a gathering of friends. Their bathrooms are a must-visit! Functional but stylish as all get-out, I bet everyone returns to their seat saying “You’ve got to go check out those bathrooms!”
