Selling pizza by the slice is a dodgy practice. If not done properly, the slices end up being tough and unsatisfying. Most Denver places that offer slices seem to begrudge it, offering only basic choices that probably appeal to teenagers who aren’t as demanding as this foodie. SliceWorks is proving them all wrong – you can do slices and do them with quality ingredients and variety! On a busy Colfax corner, hugging the edge of possibly the busiest (and best?) liquor store in the Universe (Argonaut), SliceWorks was recently built from scratch and uses every square inch of their space. It has a second floor dining/bar space – great for after work drinks with a pretty good city view.
Entering from the Argonaut parking lot, a huge glass case grabs your attention, filled with pizza, Stromboli, calzones. Transfixed by this carbo-loading vision, you are snapped back to reality by a slice magically appearing before you with a “Here, try our pizza of the day!” Yes, this place greets you with a sliver of pizza to nibble as you make your decision! I love this – it is so simple, yet hospitable and it won me over from Day 1. The pizzas in the case range from thinner crusts to deep “grandma’s pan style”. Unique combinations vary, and may include Green Chili, Baked Potato, Bacon burger tempt alongside pepperoni and veggie. Stuffed pizzas come in meat and veggie versions, both hearty and full of good stuff.
Prices start at $4 for a slice, $7 for Stromboli (enough for 2 or saved for lunch the next day!). One slice is always enough for a cheap but delicious lunch for this diner. Whole pizzas are available and judging by their take-out business, very popular among nearby businesses. A small pleasant dining space on the main level is a good spot to watch the street scene, the TVs, or read a neighborhood paper. Try their Garlic Knots dipped in marinara for a buttery, garlicky bit o’ heaven. Italian ice cream and desserts are available; sadly, I’ve always left too full to try them. Next time. Full bar upstairs with Happy Hour drink and food specials. Counter service is both fast and friendly. Look for a side case with salads and sandwiches, in case you went to a pizza place looking for that sort of thing. Parking available in lot they share with Argonaut.
SliceWorks is located at 700 E. Colfax Ave., Denver. A LoDo location is due to open soon.
