August 16 is National Rum Day. I could make jokes about pirates and sunken treasure but I’m going to spare you that joy. Instead, I’ll let you know about the delicious ways some area restaurants are going to celebrate.
Steuben’s Zombie is a potent mix of three rums, house-made falernum, house made grenadine, house made orgeat, lime juice, grapefruit juice, Angostura Bitters, and a dash of Leopold Bros. Absinthe. Be careful with this one – there is a limit of two zombies per guest. Plus, August is clam month at Steuben’s including Ipswich fried clam specials every day all month long. Very piratey!
Jop Jop, the house carbonated bubbly and shareable punch at Ace Eat Serve, has Leopold Brothers American Whiskey, pineapple infused Don Q Gold Rum, lemon, sugar and oolong tea. Or, try the famous Scorpion Bowl which features Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Leopold Brothers Peach Liqueur, Orgeat, orange, lime, pineapple and cranberry.
Buttermilk Flip is a creamy, savory homage to the tangy, Southern ingredient. Tupelo Honey’s version is prepared with butter-washed aged rum and vanilla simple syrup topped with foamy buttermilk espuma, and the zest of a Meyer lemon.
Fresh Strawberry Daiquiri at Punch Bowl Social is their more spirit-forward cocktail compared to the traditional frozen and way-too-sweet retro version. The Punch Bowl Social daiquiri features Don Q Silver Rum, house-made strawberry syrup and fresh lime juice. Guests can keep cool at Punch Bowl Social while enjoying the multitude of games (with a daiquiri in hand) including the mega 8-person foosball table, wall sized magnetic scrabble and the private karaoke rooms for some summertime rum-infused singing.
Adrift’s tiki classic, the Zombie, is made with white rum, dark rum, 151, apricot, grapefruit, pineapple, lime, cinnamon and pomegranate at Adrift. Or try the Adrift original, Stolen Booty, made with hibiscus infused rum, demerara sugar and lime. With 45 rums in stock, guests can enjoy tasting rums for 25 percent off all day.
