Living a more eco-friendly and sustainable lifestyle takes effort and requires information to make informed decisions about what we buy, how we eat, and where we go. Here at In Good Taste Denver, we are committed to sharing helpful information to help our community make informed decisions. The new year is a perfect time to renew intentions to do better for our planet.

At the 2022 annual Naturally Boulder awards ceremony, we learned about the local community of innovators that are defining the future of sustainable foods and other natural products. Thanks to this network of supportive entrepreneurs and access to capital, their ideas become products that reach the local market and may go national – impacting diets and lifestyles across the country and even the globe. The event itself was informative with inspiring guest speakers from the trenches of the sustainable food and natural products movement – and that’s why we’re sharing this with IGTD readers!

A few highlights of the Naturally Boulder awards ceremony and folks we met include:

Guest Speaker Tina Owens, heritage breeds farmer and Entrepreneur in Residence at the Applied Ecological Institute, shared lessons from her personal story to inspire everyone to advocate for and live more sustainably. She urged all to not lose heart in face of the seemingly impossible odds to address environmental degradation and catastrophic climate change. Tina described the Regenerative Movement as a way to preserve ecosystems and provide greater nutritional food density to people. She encouraged the entrepreneurs in the room to include carbon footprint accounting (and offsets) in business plans as part of being a Social Citizen and because investors will demand it going forward. She challenged entrepreneurs to ask themselves – “How can I do the greatest good?” with their brand. Tina asked us all to Think Big and learn how we can be a Regenerative Citizen – a Global Citizen.

Spinster Sisters Kelly Perkins, CEO, shared her efforts to eliminate plastic packaging from their personal soap products. It has been challenging, but she is committed and has made excellent progress. Their locally produced soaps, full of eco-friendly good stuff for dry Denver skin, have made us Spinster fans for years. Available online, in area grocery stores, or at their charming downtown Golden location.

Brand of the Year was awarded to The Good Crisp. This healthier snacking food is soon to appear in supermarkets across the country. Founder and CEO Matt Perry shared his story of being inspired by his children to offer them a healthier chip to snack on. With his wife, they uprooted their lives to follow their dream – moving to Boulder from Australia. Matt credited the open and welcoming Naturally Boulder community for supporting his family’s efforts to launch their product.
