We’ve had the pleasure of “sleeping around” our home state of Colorado and have been delighted with what we’ve found. We’re also continually amazed at how rejuvenating and enjoyable it is to have a little getaway, even when you’re only a couple of hours away (or a few minutes). A staycation feels just separate enough from your “real life” to feel like a vacation, but without the hassles of air travel or extremely long hours stuck in a car. Here, we present another little getaway in the heart of Downtown Denver, at Hotel Teatro.
LOCATION
Looking for a big city hotel with a touch of Old World class? Hotel Teatro balances the charms of an historical structure with many visitor’s preferences for fresh, updated décor. Housed in what was once the Denver Tramway office building, then offices and classes for the University of Colorado, the Teatro has been transformed into a welcoming and sophisticated oasis. Directly across from the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and a block from Larimer Square, it is a short stroll to some of Denver’s most desirable hotspots for the arts, shopping and great dining. (Fancy a longer stroll? Head to the nearby Cherry Creek trail for a walk, jog, or bike ride for miles, along the water.)
ROOM
The rooms at Hotel Teatro are spacious and recently refreshed with new art and appointments. The end result is sleek and calming – perfect for resting after a big night on the town. Elegant grey touches made us feel at once proper and business-like, while feeling totally comfortable.
Hotel Teatro is a great place to stay for a special occasion. They can add on something special like the charcuterie board and bottle of wine that was waiting for me in my room on my birthday. What a lovely surprise!
DINING
On-site dining is offered by a couple of venues that are popular among non-guests as much as guests. Light and bright, The Nickel offers a menu of American fare, created by local sourcing, a wood-fired oven, and the creativity of Chef Russell Stippich. The name, “The Nickel,” is inspired by the price one paid to ride the streetcars, back in the day.
Brunch is popular with an impressive craft-your-own Bloody Mary Bar and Cereal Milk Bar. For an apres-theater drink, Happy Hour or casual breakfast, relax in the high ceilinged Study area, to the right of the entry foyer.
EXTRAS
One of the things that makes Hotel Teatro so unique is their “Study Workshop” series, held in their beautiful Study area. Learn how to do calligraphy, choose and assemble the perfect charcuterie board for your next party and more. You don’t have to be a guest to participate in the workshops but that would certainly make the experience even better. See what classes are coming up, here.
One helpful note, that it isn’t readily obvious where the “front desk” is when you walk in. Look in front of you to the elevators, but then head to the right, just behind the Study’s fireplace/bookshelf wall. The friendly front desk folks are there and, further down to your right is where you can get a cup of coffee or grab some pastries in the morning.
Also, parking on-site can be pricey, as is often the case with hotels. Take advantage of the proximity to Union Station as a light rail hub to take the train or bus. Once downtown, between walking, the Mall Shuttle, pedicabs and ride shares, it’s easy to get all over the place.
