Who would have expected that one of the best views of a Colorado sunset would be from a hotel? We sure didn’t but that’s exactly what we got, with an uninterrupted, expansive spread of the entire front range. There it was, vibrant, jewel-like colors changing and glowing, finally setting behind the Rockies. It was spectacular, enjoyed at first over drinks and dinner and then from our room at the Hyatt Place Peña Station/Denver Airport. When we were invited to experience a staycation getaway, we discovered the new hotel has several other unique things to offer besides just great views.

Why staycation at the Hyatt Place Peña Station/Denver Airport? Here are a few really good reasons:
- Get all the sleep you can before an ungodly-early flight out of DIA. Go for dinner, hit the hay early and get some extra shut-eye before the free shuttle takes you to the airport.
- Same goes for arriving back in town super-late. Just fall into bed a few minutes away from the airport, sleep in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading back into reality.
- Flying into Colorado to ski? Spend the night on either end of your ski trip to get some rest in before heading up I-70.
- Let Light Rail do the driving to and from the hotel, stopping practically at the door at the 61st and Peña Station.
- Whisk your sweetie away for an incredible sunset or sunrise (specify whether you want the east or west-facing views and ask for an upper floor when making your reservations).

Located in the Denver’s Peña Station NEXT transit-oriented community with housing, office, and retail, the hotel’s full-on Starbucks in the lobby is as much for the neighbors as the hotel guests, before they walk across the street to the RTD Light Rail Station. The restaurant too, is a place for the community as we found out by talking to nearby residents having dinner at the hotel the night we were there. The fact that the hotel is a place people in the neighborhood go, who aren’t staying the night, made me like it even better. But the Colorado art program is really what blew me away.
The hotel is a project of Sage Hospitality, the folks behind hotels that include The Crawford Hotel at Denver Union Station, The Curtis A Doubletree Hotel and The Maven Hotel at Dairy Block and restaurants including Urban Farmer, Kachina Cantina, The Corner Office, The Cruise Room, and Poka Lola Social Club. Given that, the level of style we saw at Hyatt Place Peña Station/Denver Airport didn’t surprise us all that much.

NINE dot Arts curated a program for the hotel that is slick and modern but hearkens to the spirit of the west. It’s very playful too like the luggage wall made up of vintage suitcases and blank LCD screens over the check-in desk that, when you view them through a telescope-like viewfinder, reveal scenes from Denver and its history. A commissioned buffalo sculpture made from recycled furniture by Bryan Christiansen takes a prominent place between the lobby and the restaurant/bar area. Ties with Necklaces by Owen Gordon is made of found ties, necklaces, and brooches. It adorns the ceiling over a seating area, looking like the refuse of a rebellion by a bunch of business people at the end of a hard day at work. I loved it!

Nearly everywhere you turn, from the fitness room, to floors, to elevators, to meeting rooms, to guest rooms, there is some interesting, charming, edgy, clever piece of artwork to see, even if it is the ground beneath your feet!

Our sunset-filled dinner happened at The Bar which takes up a corner of the main floor of the hotel, with floor to high-ceiling windows. Whether you’re grabbing a cocktail, local beer, nibbles, or a meal, it’s a comfortable place to be.

In the morning, the Breakfast Bar offers a big spread that includes cage-free eggs, steel-cut oatmeal, fruit, all natural bacon and sausage, Greek yogurt and a variety of juices.
And when you’re wanting just a little something or need to grab something to go, there’s The Market.
There’s also:
- An extensive fitness center with a Peloton bike and other equipment.
- Indoor heated pool.
- Entertainment area with board games and a Sony Play Station.
- Free Wi-Fi, and more than 4,000 square feet of flexible event or meeting space.
- Free shuttle service to and from the Airport.
- The opportunity to pay a reasonable fee to leave your car parked in their lot while you head out of town instead of parking at the airport.
- A resident Golden Retriever puppy named Denver
