Update! I just returned from my second visit to Dae Gee and was excited to see that the majority of the tables you see in the photo below have now been replaced with “Grill Tables” with an actual grill inset into it and large hoods overhead to suck up the smoke. For $16 at lunch and $21 at dinner (minimum 2 orders per table), you get unlimited plates of brisket, pork belly, beef bulgogi (sliced ribeye), pork bulgogi (spicy pork) and chicken bulgogi (thigh meat) along with bowls of rice and various other sides and sauces. Yes, you cook your own meal but that’s the fun of it. We didn’t take advantage of the grill this time because we had Bee Bim Bhop on the brain and were on a mission to have it (I later found out that if we had sat at a grill table, our server would have prepared our entrees on our grill – that would have been fun!). A couple near us, who were clearly regulars, barely spoke during their lunch. They attacked preparing their meats, saucing up their rice and plucking at the various sides with utter confidence and drive like they were on a mission or something! It was fascinating to watch. I think I have a new favorite restaurant.
At the recommendation of a friend whose opinions of Denver’s Asian restaurant scene I respect, I went to Dae Gee. She had visited their Westminster location many times and when she heard they were opening a Denver location on Colorado Boulevard, just north of 8th Avenue, she told me I had to go. She was totally right.
Dae Gee, which means “pig” according to their website, serves lunch and dinner. Dinners include an Unlimited Korean BBQ Special, appetizers and entrees including Tofu Kimchee ($8), Seafood Pancake ($8), and Pork, beef or squid Bulgogi ($17-$24).
They have a fantastic lunch special Monday – Friday, 11am-3pm offering beef, pork or chicken Bulgogi marinated in spicy Dae Gee BBQ Sauce ($8-10) and Bee Bim Bhop. I ordered the latter, a base of steamed rice topped with a Korean special spicy sauce, sesame oil, assorted vegetables, marinated beef and a fried, sunny side up egg for $8! But that’s not all. Entrees come with little dishes of tasty morsels. At first I thought I was supposed to add each of these things into the Bee Bim Bhop but my server explained that they were side dishes to enjoy along the way, separately. They included a cold potato salad with cucumber and carrots, fish cakes with vegetables, bean sprouts with sesame oil and sugar, fermented cucumber kimchee and Korean salad.
One other note: I really appreciate that they post their prices on their website! So many restaurants don’t. And why? To entice us but then shock or surprise us with their high or low prices once we get there? Just tell us, people, so we know what we’re in for!
