The dramatic conclusion to the Jurassic era roared into theatres June 10, and it’s the summer blockbuster we need. See what our reviewer thought of Jurassic World Dominion.
After Dr. Malcolm’s damning words, “we’ve entered a new era. Welcome to Jurassic World” at the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, humans and animals alike have struggled to adapt to the newest threat on the food chain. A fresh antagonist has taken it upon himself to try and control the world through dinosaurs, the heroes try to stop them, and we get an epic tributary shot of the infamous T-Rex. What more does a cheap thrill blockbuster need?
To this reviewer, Jurassic World Dominion is what Kong: Skull Island attempted to be: a show-and-tell of creatures incorporated into a substantial plot. The story’s pace is a little uneven, starting out snappy to initiate all the character threads, soon transitioning into suspenseful sequences that take perhaps a bit too long to get through, yet propel this action-adventure film into thriller territory.
The dinosaurs are terrifying and majestic, the drama between heroes and villains apt, and misdirections everywhere knocking audience’s expectations off balance. With banter between the original Jurassic Park cast bouncing off the recent Jurassic World generation, there’s enough comedy relief and romance to fill in the gaps between adrenaline-spiking chase scenes as the characters try to, as always, escape the man-eating dinos they somehow keep getting trapped with.
John Williams’ Jurassic Park theme combined with the movie’s conclusion neatly tie together a series that spans across nearly three decades, and if no sequel is ever to be made, this would be a satisfying ending to one of the most successful and memorable franchises in cinematic history.
7/10 people will be happy that life found a way to make this epic movie.
