A lot of interesting stories start with, “We were drinking tequila and…” Many more interesting stories could get their start on July 24, National Tequila Day. We’ll be celebrating the day, responsibly of course, with the help of this recipe the folks from Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant were kind enough to share with our readers.
Why we’re looking to Rio Grande as our recipe source for National Tequila Day
Some 34 years ago, the restaurant served only Jose Cuervo tequila. That was pretty bold because it was at a time when tequila hadn’t yet caught on the way it has now. Today, Rio Grande Mexican Restaurants tell us they are the largest, on-site purveyor of José Cuervo in the U.S. And between all of their five locations, they make almost one million margaritas every year. They have more than 60 tequilas including 17 that are so valuable, they’re kept in a vault.
Jeff Volkman, Rio Denver’s General Manager has been with the company for 30 years and is a respected tequila aficionado. He takes yearly trips to different regions of Mexico to visit tequila distilleries, and works with some of the world’s greatest tequila purveyors, like Maestro Dobel, to craft private selection tequilas. So he knows his stuff and he’s passionate about what he sells.
In addition to shots, the Rio locations make tequila cocktails including their popular margaritas (they share the recipe for one of them, below). Their Classic Rio Marg and Big Tex Marg were huge hits during to-go and delivery days, earlier in the pandemic and helped their restaurants stay open.
