In Stapleton, there’s a pub that tries in earnest to be true to its Irish, chain-restaurant roots. Casey’s Bistro and Irish Pub,
named after Sean O’Casey, an Irish poet, is a typical, yupscale pub with dark, noise-encouraging wood tables, walls and floors. A fireplace in the center of the restaurant keeps things toasty and cozy.
Irish fare includes just what you would expect: Bangers and Mash, Shepherd’s Pie and Fish and Chips. American and lighter options include a good variety of burgers and sandwiches all served with fries as well as soup or salad for no additional charge – nice. Salads are often protein-based but filled with interesting tidbits of veggies, cheeses, nuts and fruits. Casey’s is good at being inventive with their combinations without going to an extreme. For instance, I’m curious to try their outside-the-Kraft-box Adult Mac and Cheese with grilled chicken breast, mushrooms, basil sun-dried tomatoes, Irish cheddar and brie cheese sauce. That could be really good or really not-so-much. Entrees average $10 and all appear to be very generous in size.
We’ve yet to try the weekend brunch with really delicious-sounding Irish and American items. The fact that kids eat free with each adult entrée on Sundays is extra motivation to give it a go. Speaking of kids, there is a modest kid’s menu during the week with a brunch-slant on the weekends.
On past visits, we’ve tried the heavy and hearty Shepherd’s Pie and the extremely beige Fish and Chips. My Irish father-in-law declared the fish the lightest he’s ever tasted, and he would know. Having given the Irish fare a fair turn, we turned to American choices. Although I was intrigued by the California Pretzel sandwich with turkey, tomato, sprouts, bacon and avocado on pretzel bread (whatever that might be), I chose the Grilled Chicken “Pub Club”. Grilled chicken breast, cheddar cheese, crisp bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo were just barely contained by sturdy wheat bread that was a little too sweet for the sandwich. We’ve also tried the Casey’s Grilled Chicken Chopped salad, full of yummy things and different textures in a creamy apple cider-based dressing. It was very good but, like the wheat bread, just a tad too sweet.
Casey’s has successfully become a neighborhood place to be counted on for folks coming from any neighborhood. Check the very well-done website, www.caseysbistroandpub.com for a list of menu options, specials and events. Casey’s is located at 7301 E 29th Avenue. Their phone number is 720-974-7350.
