The desire to bring his family’s Korean fried chicken to the general public led James Park to found WingWok, a fast-casual, carry-out-only restaurant in Centennial, Colorado. But it was his friendship with Partner & Proprietor, Brian Gunning, and Partner & Developer, Zach Frisch, that made starting the new business (during a pandemic) feel really doable and fun.
In this episode of the In Good Taste Denver Podcast, I chat with all three men over a Zoom call in which they gathered ’round the computer, playing off of each other’s answers to my questions. We covered a lot including why they call their food “The Fried Chicken Miracle(TM),” how their COVID model works (now and in the future), what’s so unique about their preparation method, and the role their friendship, and those of their kids, had in the birth of the restaurant.

It’s not just fried chicken at WingWok (although that’d be fine by me). You’ll find sandwiches, burritos, Kimchi fries and Wok Kimchi Fried Rice (my personal favorite) plus traditional Korean side dishes like kimchee, cuke-kimchee, white pickled radish, seaweed salad and Korean-style potato salad. The restaurant also features favorite Korean snacks, drinks and desserts including Chisling (a clear soda), Milkis (a creamy soft drink without any high fructose corn syrup), Choco Pie (similar to a Moon Pie) and, for adults, beer and soju.
This truly local business also sources many of their products from Colorado. You’ll hear why that was so important to them too.
