In 2021, an iconic Colorado restaurant re-opened after the original (open for 35 years!) closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. There have always been good reasons to visit Zaidy’s Deli & Bakery but there are even more now that they’ve expanded into the 2400-square-foot space next door, opening a handy market. Here are eight of those reasons to motivate you to go check it out.

- On any given day you may meet one of the owners, Max or Joel Appel or Beth Ginsburg (who also owns Trompeau Bakery) who regularly make the rounds of diners, checking in, saying hello. You may also meet Gerard Rudofsky, the original owner of Zaidy’s (which means “grandfather” in Yiddish). He was a charming part of the deal when purchasing the restaurant. Between them, you really do get the feeling of being welcomed for a home-cooked meal.
- Because Zaidy’s serves both breakfast and lunch all day (they are open from 8am-3pm every day), breakfast-lovers can get what they want and those who don’t “do” breakfast at all, can get what they want, even first thing in the morning. Examples include Corned Beef Hash (see picture below), Cheese Blintzes, Pancakes, Avocado Toast, Oatmeal (which is what drew me to Zaidy’s decades ago served with raisins, brown sugar, and milk), Omelets, Breakfast Sandwiches, Salads, Soups, Knishes, and sandwiches including their famous Reuben, French Dip, BLTA, Club, and Tuna Melt. There are cocktails too, including Bloody Mary’s/Maria’s, Mimosas, Yiddish Coffee (aka Irish), and spiked Hot Chocolate.

Corned Beef Hash: Two eggs served over potatoes and corned beef, served with a bagel of choice and cream cheese. - When it comes to the meats, you know you’re getting the good stuff because Zaidy’s orders them from a purveyor in Los Angeles who supplies most of the major delis in the U.S. Zaidy’s then does all the roasting in-house.
- All breads and other baked goods are made from scratch on-site and can be purchased in the new market. I got to go behind-the-scenes in the kitchen to watch challah being braided and baked (see the video below) and where other loaves of breads were cooling after just having come out of the oven. A variety of bagels are available, made the traditional way, boiled, then baked. All of the bread looks delicious, and the packages of their sliced rye just call out to be taken home, along with some sliced deli meat, chopped liver, or chicken or tuna salad to make sandwiches at home.

All of the breads used in the restaurant are also available for purchase in the new Zaidy’s Deli & Bakery Market. - Sweet treats are also baked on-site including a variety of rugalach, cakes (by the slice or whole), cookies, and the famous (and huge) black & white cookies. Get some to take home or have them there, in the new market, with a cup of coffee. You can have everything delivered, too.

Black & White Cookies about to be put out in the bakery at Zaidy’s Deli & Bakery are tender and large. - Grab-and-go items from the new market include matzo ball soup, cabbage borscht, stuffed cabbage rolls, chicken noodle soup, cream cheese, and thick, NY-style cheesecakes.

There are a large variety of grab-and-go items in the cooler at Zaidy’s plus deli meats and baked goods. - Dine on the expansive patio out front which can be enclosed when it’s cooler out and opened up as the temperatures rise.
- There’s plenty of free and easy parking in the lot out front.
