There’s just something so wonderful about sipping a cocktail. It feels refined. It tastes good. It’s something to savor and spend some time enjoying. And it warms you up inside, even if it’s a chilled drink – but that’s the nature of alcohol for you. Here are some cocktail recipes from area restaurants. Sure, you can (and should) go directly to them to have the pros make the cocktail for you. But they were all nice enough to share their Colorado recipes so we can make them at home. Thank you, restaurants!

Cocktail Recipes to Beat the Chill: Bison’s Tail

Source: Number Thirty Eight missed the National Western Stock Show like we all did. So they had their own Western Week, January 1-17, 2021 with live music, food specials and this cocktail. This is their take on a classic and a tip of the hat to bull riding events that showcases Lee Spirits’ Forbidden Fruit liqueur and Woody Creek Bourbon.

The story: According to Number Thirty Eight, this is a “riff on the Lion’s Tail Cocktail recipe from the Cafe Royal Cocktail Book (1937). The drink’s name referred to a saying, “twisting the lion’s tail,” which meant provoking the British. Bison’s Tail is a more literal reference to provoking the bison bucking it’s beer drinking rider in our logo, and a nod to the bull riding featured in the stock show. Our twist on the drink is replacing the allspice dram with a Colorado made liqueur, Forbidden Fruit, from Lee Spirits in Colorado Springs. The liqueur contains white grapefruit, honey, and a blend of spices. Forbidden Fruit was discontinued by its original distillery in the 1970’s, and Lee Spirits is now the only company in the country that makes it. The drink is bourbon forward, spicy and tart, but balanced by the sweetness from the liqueur and simple.”

Cocktail Recipes to Beat the Chill: Gluhwein

The source:  Postinos is serving their Gluhwein inside or by their cozy outdoor fireplaces at each of their three locations. Guests are encouraged to dress warm and bring their own blankets. Enjoy glasses of Postino’s mulled wine for $5 all day.

The story: Gluhwein is the German version of mulled wine, a beverage usually made with red wine with the addition of various mulling spices. It’s served hot or warm.

Ingredients:

Gluhwein in red cups with spices.

2 bottles Espiritu Malbec (available at all Postino WineCafe locations)
12 oz filtered water
6 oz orange juice
1 cup sugar
10 whole clove buds
4 cinnamon sticks
4 star anise pods
Wide strips of orange zest from one orange

Method:

Source a large saucepan or stock pot, and place over moderate heat.
Add two bottles of Espirity Malbec, filtered water, orange juice and sugar. Whisk thoroughly.
Add spices and citrus zest. (Pro tip: wrap and tie ingredients in a cheesecloth satchel before submerging – that way you avoiding sipping up a clove! A coffee filter works too.)
Simmer the mulled wine (or Gluhwein) for approximately 15 minutes, until thoroughly heated through, without reaching a full boil. (don’t want to evaporate any alcohol!)
Pour into your fave kitschy mug and enjoy!
