Summertime and ice cream go hand-in-dripping-hand. Good thing there’s a new place in Denver that lets us all experience the creamy deliciousness of genuine gelato in a big way. The enjoyment’s going to last even as the seasons change. See what I Scream Gelato’s first Denver location has to offer.

Nadav Abergel and Yuval Fuchs, co-founders of I Scream Gelato consider the business a passion project. They have fond memories of growing up enjoying gelato. As adults, they set out to make handcrafted desserts with ingredients they source from Italy. The love for gelato and other sweet treats, and their training by an Italian gelato artisan chef, show. They just opened their third (and first Denver) location of I Scream Gelato, in the Lowry neighborhood, off of Quebec and 1st Avenue. They already have locations in Breckenridge and Frisco and will soon open a location in South Beach, Miami, where they have a partner and found a great location.

Before telling you more about the business and new location, let’s cover some basics, courtesy of Abergel and Fuchs:

Gelato is pronounced “juh-lah-toh.” It’s an Italian style of ice cream that has almost no air, making it denser, richer, and creamier than regular ice cream.

Gelato differs from ice cream in other ways including that it’s made with more whole milk than cream vs. ice cream being made mostly of cream. Gelato has no eggs but ice cream has egg yolks.

And because ice cream and math can coexist, consider this:  Ice cream has a minimum of 10% of fat whereas gelato has 5-7%. Ice cream is nearly 50% air but because gelato is churned more slowly, it’s about 25% air. See? Gelato is practically health food! Okay, not really, but if you love creamier texture to your frozen treat, gelato is for you.

The I Scream Gelato Experience

There’ll always be core flavors you can count on having but there will also be new ones in rotation. The team will gladly let you try sample-spoons of as many flavors as you want. Go after those you are pretty sure you’ll love but we’d also encourage you to try like the amazing Olive Oil flavor with a date-sweetened tahini drizzle or the Chocolate Orange – amazing! Maybe Snickers, Cotton Candy,  Coconut, Ferrero Rochet, s’mores, banana, and others… Flavors will vary by location. We feel a gelato road trip coming on to the mountains and back, just to try even more!

You could enjoy the gelatos (or sorbets) in a cup but why when there are flavored Belgian waffle cones (hello, red velvet!), delicious bubble cones, and either two or four pancakes (so delicious!), to which you can add toppings of your choice (we recommend pecans). You can also create your own milkshake – imagine the possibilities.

I Scream Gelato serves coffee too, made by Whiskey Barrel Coffee. We had a tasty (and pretty) cappuccino but thought about going for an Italian Affogato which is a shot of espresso poured over vanilla gelato (let it melt a little and yum!). But, hey, we were already having mega ice cream treats so an Affogato would have been “gilding the lily” a bit much.

What else is In Good Taste? Listen to our podcast with another sweets business.

My husband has been wanting to try a bubble cone and ordered his with a scoop of Fior di Latte with chocolate and caramel. He topped that with toasted pecans and a biscuit cookie add-on. Thankfully, for drip-avoidance, it comes in a French fry-type container. I had something I would have never thought to serve as a dessert but now I’m hooked – pancakes topped with gelato – orange-chocolate for me, topped with toasted pecans with maple syrup on the side. That really wasn’t necessary, but it is nice. You could order the pancakes on their own and you should – they’re that fluffy and delicious. But a scoop of gelato on top? Oh, baby!

Both of our treats were topped/labelled with a pretty little wafer cookie stamped with I Scream Gelato. Smart! That and pretty pink walls and leaf/flower/neon sign wall invite many pretty photos that make their way to social media faster than you can gobble down your gelato.

Don’t gobble it though! Savor the textures, colors, aromas, and flavors of whatever you order from I Scream Gelato – they deserve the extra attention. We do love it when we see a business that understands the power of marketing and social  media and the I Scream Gelato team certainly does. But all the visuals and trappings that invite social media sharing are hollow if the products aren’t high quality and they certainly are here.

Take gelato to go in special to-go kits that include boxes that hold enough gelato (multiple flavors if you want), serving up to eight people, plus cones, plus toppings. They also do catering and delivery! Imagine that party.

What else is In Good Taste? Adrift is another place with a great atmosphere and food.

Fair warning, they’re making each bubble cone and pancake from scratch and that takes some time, as does helping people come to a conclusion about what flavors they want, plus adding any toppings. So this is not fast food. Expect to wait a bit, using your time to narrow down the flavors you want to sample and the way you want to enjoy your decisions.

I Scream Gelato in Lowry is located at 63 Quebec Street, #109 (actually down 1st Avenue), west off of Quebec. To learn more about the company and their other locations, visit their website, here.
